The purpose of this club is to promote and enhance the hobby of rocketry in the Syracuse and surrounding area. The club provides a safe organized environment to fly rockets. The club will also encourages and provides support for the use of rocketry as an educational tool for learning Science, Technology, Engineering and Math for youth and adult students. To this end the section holds monthly launches, May through October at the section's launch site, encouraging family to attend. At each launch, rockets are available for children to fly and take home. We teach new flyers how to prep and fly their rockets. The free rocket give-a-way program is also set and offered at other major launches in New York State are other Section's launches. The Section also actively sets up informational and display stands at community out reach events such as marker fairs. The public is invited to at least two annual build sessions held on a weekend at out meeting location at Walt's Hobbytown. The section is available for, and on a regular basis, assistance schools and and other youth groups in running educational event that include building and launching rockets. The Section also partners once a year with the Syracuse's Museum of Science and Technology (The Most) to hold a competitive rocket event for middle and high school students call the CNY Rocket Team Challenge.Launches
Our monthly launches are held May through October at Weigand's Hay farm in Van Buren. We fly under FAA Notification with an altitude limit of 3,000 ft AGL. The NAR Safety Code as well as all Club rules must be followed.HPR
Currently we have suspended all class two rocket launches until we can expand the area of participating entities to allow the 1500 foot clearance from the pads to non-participating entities. Launches up to G motors with average thrust 80 newton or less are allowed. A full range of pads, rails, and rods are available. The club is in active pursuit of a second launch site that will allow class two rockets.Meetings
Monthly meetings are held normally on the third Monday of each month at Walt's HobbyTown starting at 7:00 PM. A short business meeting is held followed by a plan presentation and project sharing by members. Those new to model rocketry are encourage to bring rocketry projects or questions to the meeting. Club members will provide answers, tips and ideas to help get beginners ready to launch.
